Reforesting
Costa Rica

Between 2002 and 2020, the total area of forest decreased globally by 6%.

It’s a big number when we move to global scales. The forests of Costa Rica are more than carbon storage, they are one of the most biodiverse habitats on the plant - home to about 5% of the estimated species on earth.

We support this project through carbon offsetting. It restores the forests of Costa Rica, which are home to around half a million species.

This restoration project began in 2007 with the goal to restore degraded land, previously cleared of native forest for agriculture and cattle grazing. The project started with one parcel of land and has acquired three additional parcels that collectively total 1,209.37 hectares, 824.56 of which have been reforested.

The project has planted a diverse mix of native and non-native species with the goal of establishing a mature forest ecosystem that can be used for carbon sequestration as well as a source of sustainable timber revenue beyond the 30-year crediting period.

Notes

Every km/sq of Costa Rica reforested provides home to abundant wildlife, as well as drawing carbon from the atmosphere. Equally, by building in a sustainable timber cycle, they recognise the need for the new forest to contribute to the local economy and create jobs.
